Hemp protein is our favourite kind of protein. It’s vegan, full of nutrients and is one of the main ingredients in our yummy breakfast smoothies. Here’s why hemp is so glorious and should be a staple in your diet.
What is it?
Hemp is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant – hemp protein is derived from its seeds. It has a light nutty flavour and is khaki green in colour. It is often used in protein shakes or sprinkled on salad.
Hemp protein does wonders for heart health. It is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which promotes cardiovascular health. The more good fat you have in your blood, the less bad cholesterol there’ll be. Hemp protein is also high in fibre which helps lower blood pressure, regulate blood sugar and lower cholesterol – all processes which facilitate a healthy heart.
Hemp seeds cleanse the colon (part of the intestine) to help with your digestive system. When your intestines are kept healthy, your digestion runs smoothly. The Omega-3 also helps keep your digestive system working effectively and prevents constipation.
Prevents sugar cravings
Protein is hard for your body to break down. This means it’s nutrients and energy are gradually released after ingestion, keeping you fuller for longer. It also results in less sugar cravings because your body is constantly being fed energy for a lengthened period of time – we crave sugar when there is a dip in our blood sugar levels. The fibre in hemp protein also regulates blood sugar levels so you’re less likely to have sugar highs and lows.
Hemp seeds contain globular proteins such as edestin and albumin. These help enzymatic functions in the blood plasma and promote the production of antibodies – functions that help blood fight diseases that enter the body. Hemp has the highest known levels of edestin in the plant kingdom, which makes it incredibly useful for our blood, immune system and muscle health.
Hemp is particularly beneficial to our diets because of its protein makeup. It has 20 amino acids, including the 9 essential ones that your body cannot synthesise itself. Having hemp protein powder is a great way to make sure that you get the right kind of protein in your diet. This is why our protein breakfast smoothies are also good for your pre-workout protein shake: they’ll give you all the nutrients you need to repair fatigued muscle ASAP.
Hemp protein powder is full of magnesium. This is crucial to bodily functions because it activates over 300 enzyme reactions in your body. It also helps your nervous system, muscle function, blood coagulation, metabolism, cell formation and of course energy production.
Hemp seeds are also fabulous sources of iron. Iron is great for your blood as it increases the haemoglobin levels. This means more oxygen can be transported around your body, especially to your muscles, helping you workout more effectively. With more oxygen in your blood, you also have more energy. Iron is good for your hair, skin and nails, too!
